Dimwits, Ramblers, and Jerks – How to Deal with Difficult People
Local government managers and employees confront a wide variety of different and often-times difficult personality types in their average day. Whether it is in the form of a difficult resident, elected official, state or county officials, department head, or other co-workers, these difficult personality types can exist at any or all levels of the organization. No matter how much we wish we could, the reality is, we cannot fix other people or avoid them.
This session examines the core elements that exist in dealing with difficult, self-interested people and provides insight on how to make individual changes and become more self-aware, allowing for the greater possibility of having productive conflict. Topics include:
- Preparing yourself for a tough conversation
- Prevent them from becoming a jerk in the first place.
- Understanding their motivations to gain cooperation.
- Leading a productive conversation
- Listening to build trust.
- Dialog tactics to gain agreement.
- Managing others’ emotions
- Why people are really upset.
- Steps to lower their temperature.
